Single family ranch dwelling with 1/3 to 1/2 fully involved upon arrival. Reports indicated occupants trapped in building.

Initial search found one occupant uncouncious. Victim removed and CPR started. Secondary searches proved no additional victims. All additional occupants were accounted for, treated and transported by EMS.

(05/01/04) SOMERS - An overnight blaze in Somers leaves one woman dead and her husband and two children hospitalized. The fire started around 12:30 Saturday morning at 17 Raemont Road, just off of Granite Springs Road in Somers. 

Richard Coyle, a next-door neighbor, says he tried to help his neighbor Phil Smith find his wife Suzie. The 49-year-old woman was still inside the home during the blaze and never made it out. Firefighters tell News 12 Westchester they tried desperately to save Suzie Smith's life, but the smoke was too much for her. Fire officials say she died of smoke inhalation.

Neighbors say Phil Smith and his two children, 12-year-old twins Henry and Katie, escaped from the house. Suzie's body was found in the bedroom. Phil Smith and the twins were released from Northern Westchester Hospital later on Saturday. They are staying with family members.

Fire officials say the blaze started in the living room and spread quickly. Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental, but they are not sure exactly what started the blaze.

Firefighters say the most challenging part of battling the blaze was the lack of water available to them. The closest fire hydrant was almost one mile away from the scene. Firefighters called in tanker trucks to shuttle water to the burning house.
