Ala. Firefighter Fatalities

Wall Collapses in Burning Building, Killing Two Firefighters

WTVY 4 CBS

Two firefighters in northwest Alabama were killed overnight when a wall collapsed at a business where they were putting out a fire.

Crews were dousing remaining hot spots at an outdoor parts and service, which caught fire earlier in the day, when the wall fell.

Other firefighters tried to dig the men out from under metal siding and other rubble.

The victims were identified as Lloyd McCulloch, Assistant Chief of the Moulton Fire Department, and firefighter Justin Jones.

Alabama Fire Marshal, Richard Montgomery says this is difficult situation to accept.

Officials say the state fire marshals office will continue investigation on the case.

Widow of fallen firefighter reflects on husband's selfless life

WAFF 48 News

Two days after her husband's death, Gail McCulloch returned to the fire scene.

She says it was just something she had to do.

Tuesday night, minutes after Lloyd McCulloch was killed while fighting the fire, Gail, his wife of more than 40 years was there, fought her way onto the scene.

"I was just going to give him a kiss and I wanted to tell him how thankful I was because now I knew he could rest," says McCulloch.

McCulloch says being married to a firefighter hasn't been easy.

Mainly the sleepless nights, worrying about her husband, the former Moulton Fire Chief. Wondering if he'd make it home alive.

"I spent the last 43 years always wondering that my husband would go to a fire and be trapped inside or die a slow, torturous death."

But this widow smiles when she looks back on the kind of life her husband will be remembered for.

One unselfishly dedicated to others, always wanting just to help.

"He was intelligent enough to realize that this was exactly what Jesus came to try to teach us. To be a servant to others, to help others and not just think about ourselves so much."

Lloyd McCulloch's visitation and funeral will be Saturday at the Lawrence County Coliseum.

Visitation is from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The funeral will be immediately following visitation.
