Two Alabama Firefighters Killed When Wall Collapses

POSTED: 11:38 am CST February 22, 2006

MOULTON, Ala. -- Two firefighters in northwest Alabama were killed overnight when a wall collapsed at a business where they were putting out a fire.

Crews were dousing remaining hot spots at Outdoor Parts and Service, which caught fire earlier in the day, when the wall fell. Other firefighters tried to dig the men out from under metal siding and other rubble.

Lawrence County Coroner Greg Randolph identified the victims as Lloyd McCulloch, assistant chief of the Moulton Fire Department, and firefighter Justin Jones.

Fire Chief Keith Vinson said his department received a call about the fire around 5:30 p.m. He said the structure was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

About 50 firefighters from a half-dozen small-town departments had the blaze under control by 8 p.m., but the fire wasn't fully extinguished until later.

Scotty Terry, who owns the Moulton business, said the wall that collapsed was wooden except for the outside, which was metal siding. His business repairs and sells lawnmowers, tools and other items.

Officials said the state fire marshals office will investigate.
