Investigators say the shooting happened just before 5am near Ripon, between Modesto and Stockton. The CHP says the shooting likely happened during a traffic stop. The officer, who had been with the CHP about five years, has not yet been identified.

Police are looking for a 1990 green Nissan Maxima, license plate 5KWA335.
