New member training

I am wondering what departments are doing for new member training before they go and take FF1. I need some ideas. Thank you in advance.

Our Jrs don't take ff1 until they are in the dept, but we do concentrate on the Scott pack- maintance, and mask confidence, ect. Basic scene support skills are also a good foundation as well

Teach them basic skills and then make sure they are understanding everything you teach them. Always go over these basics with them whenever possible, nothing beats practicing. A little written quiz to see if they are remembering anything is also a good thing to do.

Being im in an engine co. we have our probies train extensivly on where our tools are as well as doing outside tasks ie hitting hydrants. On my rescue we have probies do the same but start learning how to use and maintain all the tools on the rig as that is just as important as fire 1.
