Dual Vs. Triple Trunking

12 posts in this topic

Reading through previous posts about this topic, I realise that alot of people have the same questions i have, but I still cant figure out what triple trunking has over dual trunking. Ive been looking to upgrade my scanner with something more portable and that can incorporate the new trunked system. At radioshack the guy was set on sending me towards the pro-97 (triple trunking) over the pro-94 (dual trunking). He explained that with the dual I will lose conversations after the second transmission because it cannot keep up like the triple can. Is this really true? Is the triple trunking portable really worth the extra 50 dollars?? Thanks ahead of time for any feedback

Man that RS "salesman"(best description I can mention-they only want to sell) does not know what he is talking about. Dual tracking means it can receive two types(brands) of trunked systems, typically Motorola and EDACS. Triple triple receives three types usually adding LTR. The new Westchester system will be an analog Motorola Type II system and either the Pro 94 or 97 will recieve fine. The main difference between the two is that the Pro 97 has alpha tagging which means you can program a word description (i.e. "Westchester Fire") as opposed to only having channel 102 displayed for that frequency.

Check out strongsignals.net for more info. They usually have a lot of scanner reviews to help you out.

If your going to buy a scanner, though RS's are very good, the people behind the counter really don't know anything about radios, or very few do. I like that store but no real help. GO to an actual radio / communications store that sells amature radio equipment. That is your best be for a real good explaination from someone or they tell you where to look for answers.

I picked up a pro-97 around XMAS when it was on sale for around $150 I think. Will say that I am very happy with it. Pretty simple if you are suing the PC to program it. For me ALPHA tags are a must. I have NYC Doitt, FDNY EMS and NJSP trunked system in it as well as a few others with no problems. I can hear the NYC stuff up hear in South Westchester and I get the NJSP when I am going to work on the westside highway and even in midtown. Only thing it doesn't do is Digital.

Last I checked, most of the Rs stuff is just rebranded Bearcat. You can probably get the Bearcat equivalent cheaper at a good scanner store online.

RS's scanners are made by GRE now, not Uniden. Uniden however did make scanners in the past for RS a while back. I don;t know when they stopped. Its GRE exclusively now.

Check out Scanner USA, Popular Communications and Monitoring Times, they usually have a lot of Bearcat Vs. RS reviews all the time. Both are great scanners but both have several different options too.

Good to know. I only knew about the Uniden thing becuase I worked there, but that was 15 years ago. Are the GRE ones any good? I recall the Bearcat one's being pretty decent.

I used to be exclusively Bearcat, but I've had no problems with my Pro 97.

They are but some features are the same or extremely different from Bearcats. Depends what you want in a scanner. Make sure you do your research first. I never had a problem with the GREs except for my back light burning out after 6 years of constant use in my car.
