NYPD Adds Dodge Muscle Car to Its Fleet

The New York Police Department is adding some muscle to its car fleet: the 2006 Dodge Charger, whose 1969 model is best remembered for outrunning a hapless sheriff in "The Dukes of Hazzard."

The department plans to buy 15 police versions of the car for a pilot program that will begin this summer, officials said Thursday.

With so many flashy foreign cars on the road, speed matters, said Leonard Lesko, the NYPD's director of fleet services.

"The car that does 110 mph doesn't do it anymore," Lesko said.

In a recent analysis by Michigan State Police, Chargers equipped with a V-8 engine had the quickest acceleration (6.52 seconds to 60 mph) and fastest lap time (150 mph) of any police vehicle tested.

The police highway unit will test drive 10 Chargers featuring V-8 engines, officials said. The rest will have V-6s and hit city streets in the five boroughs.

If they pass inspection, they could replace hundreds of squad cars in the NYPD's 3,000-vehicle patrol fleet, now dominated by Ford Crown Victorias and Chevrolet Impalas.

The Charger appeared in 1966. Over the next several years, it made an impact on the stock car circuit and on television, starring as the General Lee, an orange 1969 model, in "The Dukes of Hazzard."

As a Dodge fan, that's awesome news! I'm pretty sure that it will do well in NYC, and hope it catches on locally as well. Would love to see some for WCPD, NYSP and Greenburgh PD's!!!! This car is a real police package...no wimpy front wheel drive, engine or anything.

I'm just suprised the regular radio cars will have the V-6's. I thought the V-8 was standard in the police package...but maybe they are looking for fuel economy. But I'm sure they will be happy, as will the Highway Patrol with the V-8's!

NYPD Pct. cars have usually had smaller engines. HWY gets the bigger ones. Back in the day when NYPD had the Chevy Caprices (greatest police car ever made), the 305s were PCT cars and HWY got the 350s. Same goes for the old M-bodies back in the 1980s - PCT cars had the 2-bbl, while HWY got the 4-bbl.

I would love to see NYSP buy some of these to test them, problem is they wait for Michigan SP to test them first, so the NYSP won't even begin testing until '07.

Can't wait to see NYPD using these!

Only 10 cars.. they will be hard to find. Most will be kept by a boss(Sgt or LT). I dont know if there will be one per boro, or all going to the same boro. Hopefull they hold up well. The Impalas were doomed by lots of problems, and were difficult to work on.

I heard a rumor today that the demos are coming, including 4 to Yonkers- 1 in each PCT. Also heard that a couple were floating around the county, but haven't seen them yet.

The Michigan State Police laid down the law, and the all-new 2006 Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum police vehicles were more than equal to the challenge.

The department announced preliminary results of its 2006 model year Police Vehicle Evaluation Program, which includes a series of grueling on-road tests that evaluate acceleration, top speed, braking and vehicle dynamics.

The test results are viewed by police departments throughout the country before they order new fleet vehicles. 

Dodge announced the U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Dodge Charger police vehicle is $26,575, and the MSRP for the Dodge Magnum police vehicle is $28,275 (including $675 destination charge) when equipped with the 3.5-liter High Output V-6 engine.

U.S. MSRP for the Dodge Charger police vehicle with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine is $28,805, and the MSRP for the 2006 Dodge Magnum police vehicle with the HEMI engine is $30,505. Both prices include a destination charge of $675.

Highlights from the September 2005 Michigan State Police evaluation program included the following preliminary results:

Top Speed: Dodge Charger 5.7-liter HEMI posted best-in-class top speed of over 145 mph
