Firefighter Recruit Requirements

• Applicants must be 18 years of age.

• Must be of sound physical and mental health to adequately perform the duties of a firefighter.

• Must have a good driving record (fewer than 8 points during the previous 3 years) and be able to obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Driver License (Operator, Class D).

• Applicants must pass a written exam, Candidate Physical Ability Test(CPAT) and two oral interviews. Candidates must pass each phase of the recruitment process.

• Pre-employment drug test and annual drug screening tests will be conducted.

• Upon making a job offer, Federal background check and two physical exams (Fire Department Health Center and Arizona Public Safety Retirement System) will be conducted. Candidates must successfully pass both the background check and physicals.

• Proof of valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification (State of Arizona or National Registry) is required two weeks prior to employment.

• Upon employment, all Firefighters have 24 months from the date of appointment to move into Maricopa County and must continue Maricopa County residency for the duration of City employment.

• Applicants with high school diplomas or GEDs are preferred (reading material used on the written exam, during the Academy, and on the job will be at approximately grade 14 level).

The City of Phoenix is planning the application period from March 6-10, 2006.

The written exam has been scheduled for April 19, 2006.

The Phoenix Fire Department does not supply applications for jobs within the fire department.
