FDNY Talk

11 posts in this topic

I know some of these words/sayings did not start in the fdny and other departments use them but thats where ive heard most of them first. after all, we all do know that the fdny is an innovator in the firefighting world. can anyone think of any others

and i am not to sure about some of these meanings but ill give it a shot.

AFA-automatic fire alarm?

Truck-ladder

mdt?-the on board computer or something

BI-I’ve heard units say this or something like it when they are "delayed due to bi"

"K"-there is a topic on this-its what used to be at the end of ever Morris code transmition when they dispatched using that.

doubtful-means that they will most likely need more rigs

probable-means that they will be able to contain the fire with what they have

side or exposure 1, 2, 3, and 4-(in Westchester i have heard more ABCD)-a list of exposures going clockwise (1 is the front, 2 is to your left if you are looking at the front and so on)

district manual alarm-…not a clue exactly what that pertains to, I am guessing some kind of pull alarm?

The class of alarms like a class c alarm-not sure

“ticket”-how rigs are dispatched

what in the world is a salamander???????? (10-33 code 1-caused by near by working fire, BBQ, salamanders, ect.

RAC unit-not sure

all hands-using all firefighters that are on that scene

i am sure i will think of more later but for now, that’s it :lol: .....anyone else know any more or want to correct me or maybe ever where some of these really started and how?....talk it up

AFA = AFA Protective Systems

mdt = Mobile Data Terminal

BI = Building Insepection

district manual alarm = Manual Alarm is just that, a pull station. District should be the name of the company.

The class of alarms like a class c alarm-not sure

Class 3 = Building Alarm system

Class E = Building Alarm system Engine or Ladder only. Chief monitors

Class J = Hotel Alarm System

RAC = Rehab unit in plain terms

all hands = Signal 7-5. Using 3 Engines and 2 Trucks.

a salamander is a heating device ( usually propane fired )

to keep workers warm but more often used to heat an area where

plaster or joint compound or mortar work has been done.

Ticket- I think it comes from the teleprinters that were in the firehouses that the alarms used to come over. Now it is a computer screen that gives the " Run"

there are still tickets that print out with the receipt of the alarm and are given to the chauffer or officer...the mdt also gives a ticket...

Tickets are better than when they had to count bells. I wish we had tickets for our runs in Westchester.

all hands = Signal 7-5. Using 3 Engines and 2 Trucks.

This has been changed. It is also 2 engines, 2 trucks and a squad.

Just came down yesterday.

Class C?? Must have been someone slurring Class E.

K is from the old morse code for end of transmission.

Please feel free to PM me with quetions.

If you hear AFID or AFRD-Apparatus Field Inspection/Re-Inspection Duty.
