From my understanding, Pleasant Valley also has a few staffed guys. Also, if I am wrong about this, someone please correct me. IBM is a private Fire Brigade. As far as I know, they do not hire off of a Civil Service list, they have their own separate application and hiring process.

What is the deal with Castle Point. Are they a Federal FD? If so I doubt they would hire off of a county list. And what about Greenhaven. I am not sure if they are a fire brigade as well, excluding them from a county civil service list.

City of Beacon, Arlington, Fairview, and LaGrange are all combination districts or departments.

City of Poughkeepsie is a fully career department, although I have heard a rumor that there is still (1) volunteer with them, if anyone can clarify this for me.

IBM is seprate from the County testing, but the way to get in is to know someone and after that you wait to fill a fired or retired or transfer spot.

The IBM complex has their own fire brigade that does not hire from the list. In fact, they just posted an ad in last weeks Poughkeepsie Journal. It is not IBM that does the staffing, it's the property management for the IBM complex.

Castle Point is a federal position that has it's own testing through the Hudson Valley Veterans Affairs. The testing is done for both Montrose and Castle Point VA sites.

Thanks for the info Truck6018. I knew I was somewhat right along those lines. The ad in the Poughkeepsie Journal the other week was for the contract security firm that works for IBM. My understanding is that IBM only staffs/staffed 3 guys on a shift, and to comply with CFR 1910.134, they need 4 guys for the "2 in, 2 out". So, this company hired a security guard with the proper qualifications who, if and when a fire call goes out, runs over and acts as the 4th guy.

Greenhaven as well as the other correctional facilities have Fire Brigades that are staffed with Correction Officers. Some facilities offer specialized teams such as: Greenhaven with Wild Fire Crews (made up with inmates under supervision), also they have Dutchess County's only Confined Space Rescue Team (made up only with Correctional Staff). Fishkill and Downstate Correctional Facility's also have Fire Brigades. Sing Sing in Ossining is sending its Brigade to FF 1 at Valhala for complete training.

Ok so here's some summative + definative info on career positions in the D.C. for the n00bs-

Municipal Fire Depts. that have career staff (all are combination.. including City Fire.. which does have one Volunteer who has seen more fire than most of us combined)-

The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response

Arlington

City of Beacon

Fairview

Lagrange

New Hackensack (1)

Pleasant Valley (3 FFs)

City of Poughkeepsie

Other paid positons-

Castle Point (DOD)

IBM Poughkeepsie (Grubb + Ellis)

IBM East Fishkill (IBM)

The Correctional Facilities (not really career Fire staff but staffed by paid C.O. employees mostly) (NYS DOC)

Dutchess County Airport (Maintenence also I believe)

The IBM facility jobs are completely different from each other, the East Fishkill facility has IBM hired FFs (a resume, a spot from attrition, and a prayer will get you hired there), the Poughkeepsie site contracts with Grubb and Ellis... an independant contractor (who is the one with the ads in the paper).

Castle Point is a DOD job (Department of Defense) which would be announced on the DOD website (so watch it closely).... Resume job... and follow all directions closely regarding the resume outline and interview process (the feds don't screw around).

Airport ARFF crews are Maintenence/refueling crews from my understanding that are cross trained (these guys really have their stuff together though...lots of training)... not really sure about the particulars about the job (whether independant contractors or actual airport employees). Anyone in the know please interject...

As far as the municipalities they are Civil Service positions... thus residence preferred and you must be on the firefighters list. To get on this you must take a test offered by the Dutchess County Department Personnel every ~4 years. You must be over 18 years of age. The test is announced on the Dept. of Personnel's website a few months before testing, and the date and test is the same as Westchester's test. You must score a passing grade and then, if in a preferred position in a district (score and legal residency... and yes, they do check residency and are STRICT), you must pass a physical exam called the FPAT (Firefighter Physical Ability Test... alot like CPAT) every year to stay on that list.

If all checks out and you are fortunate enough to get a canvass letter you go to the interview (and either before or after MUST pass a mandatory physical + drug screening).

Then you get the job and go to probie school... sounds easy right? :D

Anyway, there are also positions at the 911 center (Dutchess County 911 and City of Poughkeepsie) for dispatcher... this is also a great job and also a civil service residency preferred position with about the same process (with slightly alternate testing procedures and sans physical agility test) than firefighter.

And then there's always Commercial EMS... If you are dead set on working in the D.C. you can work your way up seniority in any of the commercial EMS companies and get a shift in one of the following towns as a 911 only municipal contract provider;

Beacon Volunteer-Alamo

Beekman-Alamo

Dover- Northern Dutchess Paramedics (NDP)

East Fishkill- Mobile Life (MLSS)

Fairview-Alamo

Village of Fishkill- MLSS

Millbrook- Alamo

Pawling- Alamo

Pleasant Valley- Alamo

Union Vale- NDP

Wappingers (Town of- Hughsonville, Chelsea, New Hackensack)- Transcare

I think that's all for EMS, but that's subject to change with contractural negotiations, funding, the direction of wind :D, etc.... There are also municipal COVERAGE areas for the above providers but are not dedicated 911 busses to that municipality and are subject to relocation (although even some of the above are not always DEFINATELY DEDICATED due to the system status management concept).

Oh well, hopefully that will clarify any questions.

FIREFIGHTER PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST (FPAT) EVENTS:

The Firefighter Physical Ability Test consists of eight events that require candidates to perform simulations of the activities that are part of the firefighter’s job. During all events, you will wear a weighted vest, which simulates the equipment and breathing apparatus that a firefighter normally wears during these types of activities. In addition, the first event requires the candidate to carry an additional 25 pounds. These events require cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. This test is stressful and may be dangerous to your health. Therefore, you will be required to get medical clearance from your physician before participating in this physical ability test. The events are described below.

1. Stair Climb: Participant must climb and descend four flights of stairs, wearing an extra 25 pounds (75 lbs. total). At the top of the stairs, candidate hoists rope fastened to a 2-1/2” hose up to 5th floor and brings nozzle through into the window.

2. Hose Drag: Candidate will grasp nozzle of a 200 feet long extension of dry hose, place the hose line over the shoulder, and drag the hose for 100 feet making one 90 degree turn around an obstacle. Candidate will stop, drop to one or both knees and pull 50 additional feet of hose to the finish line.

3. Equipment Carry: Candidate will remove two saws from cabinet that is 48” off the ground, and place them on the ground. The candidate will then pick both saws up, one in each hand, and carry them while walking 75’ around a cone then back to the starting point.

4. Ladder Raise and Extension: Candidate will walk to top rung of a 24 foot aluminum extension ladder which is lying on the ground, lift in a hand over hand fashion and place it against a wall. The candidate must then raise a secured ladder and extend it using the fly section and then lower it using a hand over hand, controlled fashion.

5. Forcible Entry Simulation: Candidate will use a 10 pound sledgehammer and strike a weighted tire in a horizontal direction on a waist high table, 35” high. The tire is to move from start position to end position as marked.

6. Search: Candidate will navigate on hands and knees over and around obstacles through a dark 3’ x 4’ tunnel, which is 64 feet long.

7. Rescue: Candidate will drag a 165-pound mannequin for 70 feet.

8. Ceiling Breach and Pull: Candidate will alternately push and pull an overhead, hinged door using a pike pole for four repetitions of 3 pushes and pulls.

The protocol for the FPAT will be available at the test site on June 3, 2006. The FPAT is similar to the CPAT that is administered at the Fire Training Academy. The requirements for CPAT are available on www.calgary.ca (Search for CPAT).
