• Recruits Steven Delbene and Michael Mirabella

SCARSDALE — The Scarsdale Police Department filled out its ranks yesterday, swearing in six new officers in a ceremony at the village library attended by about 75 friends, family members and public officials.

"This is a special day," Police Chief John A. Brogan said in welcoming the new cops. "In the 30 years I've been here, we've never hired this many people on the same day."

The village now has a full complement of 45 officers. The village began recruiting candidates three months ago, sending letters to 240 prospective officers. A series of interviews and tests narrowed the list down to the six who took the oath of office yesterday.

"They're the cream of the crop," Brogan said. "This is the beginning of a new and rewarding career, and hopefully a fulfilling one, also. That will depend on what you bring to the table."

Mayor Peter Strauss took a moment to welcome and thank the families of the new officers for supporting them.

Three of the new officers are coming from duty as New York City police officers and one is transferring to Scarsdale from a part-time job as a Dutchess County deputy sheriff. They will begin a seven-week, in-house field training program to learn local policies and procedures before hitting the streets on their own. The other two officers will begin basic police training at the Westchester County Police Academy on Monday.

"I'm a little nervous about the academy but mostly I'm excited," said rookie Steven Delbene after receiving his badge and the congratulations of his family and new colleagues. "Scarsdale is a great community. It's just awesome, and I'm very happy to be here."

Just as happy was Yonkers police Lt. Mario Mirabella, who presented his youngest son, Michael, with his badge during the ceremony. "This is a very, very happy day for me," he said. "I have three sons and I'm very proud that one of them decided to follow in my footsteps."

Asked if he had any advice for Michael as he prepares for the police academy, Mirabella said, "I'd tell him to always be professional and work hard to serve the public in the best way he can. That's what our job is all about."
