ScanHealth to provide ePCR solution for FDNY

ScanHealth Inc. announced that it will provide a comprehensive electronic pre-hospital care documentation system for the New York Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Command, the largest provider of emergency medical services in the world.  Terms of the multi-year contract were not disclosed. 

“New Yorkers want two things from their emergency medical personnel – they want them to be there when they need them, and, as taxpayers, they want the Department to be as efficient as possible,” said John Clair, Assistant Commissioner of Medical Affairs, for FDNY.  “ScanHealth provides a complete and reliable solution for collecting and processing pre-hospital care report data.  Efficient and accurate data collection and run report processing is absolutely critical in order for the City to be reimbursed by insurance companies and other payers for ambulance runs.  Perhaps most important of all, the ScanHealth system frees our EMTs and paramedics from the burden of paperwork and allows them to focus on what they do best – providing quality pre-hospital care to people in need.”

User-friendly scan technology and the Internet form the foundation of the HealthEMSÔ data collection and management system.  Here’s how it works:  EMTs and paramedics continue to take good care of patients and use a clipboard, pen and scannable pre-hospital care report form to collect critical patient data.  When they return to the station, they slide the form into a document-fed scanner and click on an icon using a desktop computer. The proprietary HealthEMSÔ software creates an electronic image of the form and extracts key ambulance data that is accessible for retrieval using the HealthEMSÔ application. HealthEMSÔ retrieves scanned data using Java, Java-script and HTML pages, providing authorized users with the ability to view any ambulance data via a Web browser.

ScanHealth began discussions with FDNY at the end of 2000.  A two-month pilot project, which involved the installation and training of HealthEMSÔ at two FDNY battalions, occurred in the third quarter of 2001.  “Our system was truly put to the test in the days and weeks following the September 11th disaster,” said Tim Hakamaki, ScanHealth vice president, EMS.  “Simply put, it worked great.  Pre-hospital care data was collected and managed appropriately, during a very complex situation.”
