Vehicle Exhaust Systems

5 posts in this topic

We have finally broken ground for our new headquarters station. Just when you think everything is going smoothly some one comes up with a problem. At this past months meeting we had a hour long debate on the type of exhaust system we will put in the new building. The building committee has spec'ed out a ceiling mounted box type system similar to Airmotion or Airvac911. There are some menbers who are in favor of a hose system such as Plymovent or Neiderman. Both sides raised good points and we have decided to have a special meeting to go over both systems.

I am interested in hearing from the EMTBravo Network as to what type of system you have in your stations. How and why did you choose the system you have. Is everyone satisfied with thier current system? What types of problems have you had with it? Do you feel it does an adequate job of removing the diesel exhaust? Now that you have had the system, would you change to the other type? If anyone is changing from one type to another, why are you changing?

I know that the newest stations in the area are Ossinning Rescue 14/Ladder 41, Lake Carmel, Armonk, Port Chester, and Rye Brook (Did I miss anyone?). I would like to hear from members of these departments as to thier choices. You can either post it here, PM me or e-mail me at EJS1810@aol.com.

Thanks for all your help. This is what the network is for.

The best argument I've heard is that the hose type systems are not constantly attached to the rigs. Unless they are every moment that rig is running they don't do any good. The box systems work all the time. Add to that the hose systems are both in the way and are more prone to damage, the box system seems to make sense.

At HQ in PC we had 3 installed in the main area and 1 installed in R40's bay. My opinion is they work great. They are relativly quiet and dont have stupid hoses coming down off of them.

The only problem i forsee with them in the future is getting the filters changed, as they have 24lbs of filters in them the rep told me that trap: HEPA, CO and other particles . But it sure beats having to hook up hoses to the rigs especially since all rigs are different at this point.

Also for us manuevering aroudn the firehouse is often done and these allow us somewhat to do that.

They turn on automatically when the door goes up or down, by button, and an infra red sensor across the bay doors as well(up high enough so only a truck can set them off not a person) at HQ, the rep said there were other devices that can be hooked up too.

I myself already noticed a change in the quality of air in the place after only a month or so of use. Hope this helps.

We have a huge fan in the back of the bays that suck the air out. Works extreamly well, and the smell of exaust is never around

I've had some experience with No-Smoke systems which are essentially a box installed on the exhaust system of the rig that closes a butterfly valve and holds the exhaust while you back into the building. When you pull out, it will stay closed for a few seconds and then open up again once you've been running for about 30 seconds. It's been about 5 years since I've operated a piece of apparatus with one of these systems installed, but they appeared to reduce horsepower and torque.

In addition, I've had some experience with roof mounted exhaust fans in the fire station. When the bay door(s) open, the fans go on and create a draft through the open apparatus bay door and up/out through the roof. These work very well.
