NORTHERN WESTCHESTER VOLUNTEER FIREMENS ASSOCIATION

FIREFIGHTERS’ SEMINAR

WITH BATTALION CHIEF GERALD TRACY, FDNY

BACK TO BASICS, AGAIN? AMERICA TODAY

Despite our technological advancements in fire suppression and building construction, every firefighter

must still follow very basic principles and disciplines in order to perform safely and efficiently. The fire service

today performs many functions of customer service that require advanced training that has distracted

us from the very basics of our trade. This program will review the fundamentals of preparedness,

response, fireground actions, accountability, and safety. It will cover the challenges posed by new construction

trends and how the fire service must adjust strategies to operate in these structures. The pros

and cons of advancements in fire equipment will be reviewed, showing how to incorporate the positive

aspects into operations.

ENHANCING OUR SIZE UP

Firefighter and public safety is dependent upon our diligence, including our efforts in performing a thorough

size up. Upon arrival, time is of the essence. This program will review methods that can stimulate and initiate

the thought process for characterizing priorities of operations upon arrival. It will assist in the formulation

and implementation of tactics that will increase efficiency and safety by presenting a series of visual

and mental cues to employ to assist in categorizing information.
