COLTS NECK -- Firefighters from nearly every company in western Monmouth County joined forces yesterday to battle a fierce fire at an uninhabited, nearly-completed mansion on Route 537.

Details concerning the fire were sketchy last night. It began at about 5:30 p.m. in the upper levels of the mansion, which is set back hundreds of feet from the road and surrounded by a sprawling field and a large, empty marble fountain.  

By 6:30 p.m., the area was swarming with firefighters, police and first aid personnel. Three trucks with extended crane arms blasted water into the building, but it continued to burn. By 7 p.m., the central roof collapsed into the building, and a small crowd gathered at the edge of the field to watch the mansion burn.

Colts Neck police said the fire was brought under control at around 9 p.m. last night. No injuries were reported.

The owner of the home could not be confirmed late last night. Eyewitnesses at the scene said the house has been under construction for roughly four years, and no one has lived in it.
