Metro-North Has Tankers Available For M/A

7 posts in this topic

Yesterday, during a visit to the Croton-Harmon Train Yard, we were informed and saw for ourselves that MTA-Metro North Railroad has a water tanker car on each line with 10,000 gallons of water and a 100GPM pump with an FD connection as well. When requested through the Rail dispatchers thru 60 Control, they can get an engine to pull it with an ETA of about 1 hour.

Although this may not be on the first due card, I figured I would share it with all of you.....it may be good for a large brush fire in a remote area, a water main break, a large fire near a railroad line where water supply is a concern, etc.

Also, I was very impressed with the size of the Croton-Harmon train yard. Not only is there some very cool stuff going on there (and the new M-7's are awesome, I even got to sit in the drivers seat of one and also do search and rescue in another) but both Harmon and Croton FD have a signifcantly challenging and unique hazard in their district. In addition to the MNRR Fire Bridgade, does Croton FD have any special equipment, training or alarm assignment to deal with this massive and danger-filled facility?

Any structural call in that facility is a General Alarm response with Tanker 10 as well. As you said, it is unique and chock full of surprises. We are currently working on pre-plans, however, most of that facility is being rebuilt.

Over the years we have responded to many fires and other special incidents in this complex.

For all of you who may come into this facility, remember this. The very large building is Building #6. For almost 2 years now we have been ordered to never operate on the roof itself, so personnel need to stay on the catwalks and in aerials.

Another thing, the MNRR Fire Brigade is there during normal business hours, and in addition to their normal jobs, they handle fire and medical emergencies routinely. They are a great asset to us.

Good to keep on the backburner... that may help more up the line in the northern sections instead of in more urban/suburban areas down on the southern WC and CT borders.

I also have to give my kudos to the fire brigade. I deal mostly with them on medical calls and they do a great job at BLS.

In addition, Don MacLennan who is head of the brigade is always professional, and more then willing to work with and train responders in best dealing with rail emergencies and their safety concerns.

I am not sure if it is truth or not, but I heard from a MNR source that the tankers are not always filled. As a matter of fact, the comment I got was that they were empty for the open house.... thats why they wanted the Tanker there... plus are they full in the winter ?

just words from the street.

I would imagine depending on the inlets that it does have a signifcant fill time also. It still is a nice option to have, but I would have to opt for drafting along the Hudson line first.
