Does anyone know if Boston FD has actually ever hired off their non-resident list?

Not to my knowledge....and if they did, it was a rare thing. Getting on Boston FD is a very, very tough thing to do. Not only do they not hire very large classes or often, but you have to be a resident, and a lot of the times recruits have family in the department. The minority clause of the past two decades also knocked a lot of people out of the running.

All I know is that when I took the Massachusetts Civil Service Exam for Firefighters and Boston was one of the cities I listed on my preference list, I recieved a List number of "#551 on the "Veteran, non-minority, non-resident list". I am pretty sure the lists for Boston are:

-Veteran, minority, resident

-Non-veteran, minority, resident

-Veteran, non-minority, resident

-Non-veteran, non-minority, resident

-Veteran, minority, non-resident

-Non-veteran, minority, non-resident

-Veteran, non-minority, non-resident

-Non-veteran, non-minority, non-resident

My chances of being hired there were slim to none and slim was on a plane to L.A.!!!!!

I didn’t think so. I had heard Boston FD is VERY nepotistic.

I think affermative action in the FD or anything else is abusrd. Why should someone get a job based on skin color or ethnic backround? It should all be based off the test scores and physical ability and nothing else. I could rant for hours but im not.

EMSJunkie –

I could not agree with you more. Because of the affirmative action program, the “best man for the job†goes by the wayside. Instead you have the guy who may have barely passed that is going to be backing you up.

How is it fair that I spend all my time studying to get a good score…and a guy who scored lower then me just slides right by me into a great career?

I could care less about anyone’s race, religion, sexual orientation, or sex when it comes to the fire service…just your ability to do the job safely.

Don’t even get me started on that one!
