JJ Pinto's Vintage Mt. Vernon Apparatus Photos

3 posts in this topic

Those 4 Photos that are featured on the front page of this site are "Classics" to say the least. Wonder if Mr. Pinto has anymore of FDMV to share with us, similiar to these 4? (Like a Photo of the Old Snorkel 1 Unit) and others? How about any similiar Yonkers and New Rochelle Photos from about the same time (1960's and Early 1970's)

The first photo is a '47 or '51 Seagrave that was a retired engine. The booster tank would be filled with foam with numerous 5 gallon cans of 3% foam in the hose bed. I beluieve that this was the foam truck that was dispatched to Brooklyn in the late '70's M/A to FDNY in Brooklyn for a ship fire.

The second photo is of Truck 4, a spare truck. It was originally Truck 3. Note that it is a '73 tractor with a '60 trailer. Truck 3 and Engine 3 collided in the early '70's at Sandford Blvd. & S. 4th Ave. while responding to a box. Engine 3 was repaired but Truck 3's tractor was totaled. This tractor, built by American LaFrance, was purchased (a 2 speed transmission - UGH !) and never worked out well. The tractor was actually flooded while at the American LaFrance factory in Elmira, NY.

The third photo is of a refurbed Truck 2 and is parked opposite Station 1 on East Lincoln Ave. The refurb project was a mess in that the contractor went "belly up" during the contract and the truck was held hostage. This is the truck that tipped over at a job on N. Columbus Ave and was totaled.

Finally, thge last photo is of Engine 5, a 1958 Mack, parked in front of the firehouse at 211 S. 4th Ave. The house house be torn down now and is a vacant lot.

Great History on FDMV. I would (as probably others) would love to see more photos of the FDMV Rigs from the 60's and 70's, especially Snorkel 1 - Bring Them On !!!
