CNY Firefighter dies while responding

Officials are investigating the death of a volunteer firefighter in Tompkins County.

Bret Neff, thirty-seven years old, of Dryden, was a member of the Hartford Fire Department. He was called to assist in a fire in the Town of Caroline Monday around 5:30 pm.

A member of his crew, who was driving the Hartford tanker truck told sheriff's investigators that as Neff exited the tanker, he accidentally released the emergency brake, pinning Neff between the rear of the tanker and another fire truck.

Neff was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead.
