MVA's Kill More Police Officers Then Guns

I was reading this on another board:

Take a look at what happened to my Sergeant last Saturday.  While driving on the freeway, he swerved left to avoid a slower vehicle.  He hit the center wall, overturned several times and slid across 5 lanes of the freeway coming to rest on the right shoulder.  He suffered three hairline fractures to his Pelvis (no surgery thank goodness) and some minor abrasions.  He had his seatbelt on, and the front and side airbags deployed.  All in all he was very lucky to walk away from this.  Just another reminder to buckle up!   :)

Thank god that officer walked away.

This got me to thinking. Should police package vehicles be beefed up in any way to promote officer safety???? It's being said that traffic accidents are bigger killers to police officers then guns nowadays

I personally think items, such as a beefed up frame, enhanced seats and belts, intrusion bars and a rollcage would help tremendously in the ever increasing danger that is common traffic.

I really don't think its an issue of beefing up the cars. There are already models which offer added protection features in the doors and such and often the partion is connected by tubular steel which also acts as rollover protection. You can add all you want, but speed and deacceleration are not affected by that, only the cars unibody construction can help dissipate those forces and that is only to a point. Factor in some of the speeds that are involved with these incidents, coupled with how many are not restrained, (I know its bad, but there are many that do not wear them unless they are in a chase, and I've been hung up by a seatbelt trying to get out of a vehicle quickly), you may find the answer there.
