fireworks displays

Does the FDNY stand by at fireworks displays? I think that someone from Fire Prevention has to be there, but what about an engine company? If so, is it the local first-due engine or an overtime unit charged to whoever is doing the display?

It depends on the size of the display and location. Macys usually gets all the fireboats along with a bunch of land based companies(more for an MCI/Decon than anything). We usually special call an engine and one of the fireboats for standby for most of them. Fire Preventions Fireworks Safety Unit is around as well. The Engine that goes is crewed by members on straight time. As for who goes, it depends on the situation. Sometimes it's the first due engine, other times it is a predetermined engine company.

Working in Fire Prevention here is what happens with the fire works displays:

FDNY Inspectors over see the loading operation with the pyros at the site, to make sure nothing goes worng, The administrative company comes before the show and stays a while after the show to make sure nothing goes on fire... and for the Inspectors working the show it is considered overtime.. thats the basic overview of the operation hope this helps you

And then you get the pi$$ed off neighbors who call and complain about the noise and how nobody was informed about it. And us dispatcher types tell them the same thing, we were also not informed about it until the company asked to be assigned.
