02/22/04) PEEKSKILL - Oil from a ruptured heating unit on the grounds of Camp Smith U.S. Military Base in Peekskill caused fuel to overflow into a sewage treatment plant, which is close to the Hudson River. Officials say a faulty fuel regulator broke and allowed more oil to flow into the heating unit than it could possibly burn. The spill happened Saturday morning at Camp Smith off of Route 9, near Annsville Creek.

Environmental cleanup crews were on the scene Sunday to monitor the situation. Booms were placed near a stream leading into the Hudson to prevent any oil from seeping into the river. A hose from a tanker truck sucked up oil leaking from the sewage treatment plant on the base. It is estimated that between 4,000 and 5,000 gallons of oil spilled.

Both camp officials and members of the county health department believe most of the oil is in the heating building or seeped into the nearby grounds. They say it will take several more days to determine the extent of any environmental damage.

Crews must also determine if any oil seeped under the ice of the Hudson River. Units of the Coast Guard as well as the Department of Environmental Conservation are monitoring the Hudson River to determine just how much of the oil may have made it into the water.
