Firefighters tear apart wrong vehicle

July 22, 2005

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany firefighters were tearing apart a minivan as part of a

training exercise when someone noticed the personal items inside. That's

when they realized they had trashed the wrong vehicle.

This week, Albany officials approved the city's share of the $12,000 bill

for the 2002 Dodge Caravan that was mistakenly ripped open during a drill at

a junk yard a year ago.

Officials say the firefighters routinely practice accident scene rescue

techniques by tearing open donated junked cars. In June 2004, they were

supposed to practice on an older vehicle located on another part of junk

yard.

Instead, they used the Jaws of Life to tear open a three-year-old minivan

that was at the business to undergo repairs

There was a story like this last year sometime.. Some idiot parked his car in a no parking zone behind the firehouse. There was from what I understand two cars on either side of his car that were dropped off for training. So they cut all three. Opps maybe but I think the idiot learned his lesson.

Yes, it happened in Pleasantville, a member left his car in the rear of HQ(an older Honda, with only one license plate (registered in another state)), while in Florida. Unfortunately, the training cars were parked next to his. Fortunately the only damage done was a broken side window, and I think a tail light. We were able to salvage a tail light from another car to be used as training, and the Chief paid for the window

I think the training blooper of the year may have just happened in Baltimore this week. Three guys from my dept were taking handson training and they were told to break for lunch and next thing you know the buillding next to the one they were working on is fully involved. The fires the were lighting in building #3 got into a pipe chase then the common cockloft and next thing you know building #4 ends up as a third alarm for Baltimore city.

Expo Students fight a real structure fire with Baltimore City Firefighters.

BALTIMORE CITY, MD. On the second day of hands on training at the 2005 Firehouse Expo some students received real live firefighting experience. The classes was being held at a old city project housing development which are planned to be turned down. A smoke barrel caught a wall on fire by mistake and lead to a two alarm fire.

The "Attack with Authority" and "Engine/Truck Company Operations" courses were operating on Southclare Road with help of two out of service Baltimore City Engines. In the morning session a fire was started by a smoke barrel which was quickly extinguished by the students with handlines. The instructors used TIC's to determine that the fire was put out and there were no extensions.

At the lunch time break the students observed smoke coming from the other end of the housing unit. The units involved were bricked up and had to be breached by the students. The delay caused the fire to get a good start prior to the attacks crews made it to the fire's seat in the attic. The instructors then requested the assistance of the Baltimore Fire Dept. and a first alarm assignment was dispatched.

The responding units were delayed due to they stopped at other training sites in the area. The crews observed the fake smoke and began to lay in to the wrong buildings until they were corrected.

A number of Baltimore Firefighters were injured when part of the roof fell on them and needed to be taken to a hospital. The fire also did happen on the hottest day of the year which leads to many heat injuries. Additional EMS and fire units were then dispatched to the scene to assist with the operations.

A City Chief then decided to cancel all training in the area due to the major incident and the extreme weather conditions. The students from other classes then were brought to the scene to assist the Baltimore Firefighters in cleaning up hoses and to place the City equipment back into service.
