What is the difference between a station and a substation?

A fire departments station is usually their headquarters where most of their activity takes place. A sub-station may just be another station used to house other apparatus and/or offices.

A department that comes to mind is Mohegan. Thier main Station (or headquarters) is on Rte. 6. This is where most of their offices are for both volunteer and career personnel. This is also where their ambulance corps are located, as well as where thier dispatching is done. They have 3 other stations, or sub-stations, throughout their district. Each station is located at different ends of the district and houses at least one engine and one aerial unit. This enables them to have better response times. In Mohegan, a station may be known as a sub-station, but they are all active fire houses.

Other departments utilize sub-stations for just plain storage uses. Verplanck has a sub-station that houses their bus and some dive-team equipment i believe.

My Dept. has 4 main stations and 2 sub-stations. Our station 2, and station 4 each have sub-stations. Those substations cover the outer reaches of the company lines, where response time would be longer from the main station. Also, the offices for those companies are housed in the main station, and the sub-staitions only house apparatus. Our sub-station 2 houses 2 engines, and out sub-station 4 houses 1 engine and out Squad truck.
