Good place to start?

2 posts in this topic

Hello all, new to the forum (which looks great) as well as to the area when it comes to EMS. I've lived in Westchester my whole life, but have spent the last 5 years more in upstate new york (central new york, midstate ems region). I've been a level 3 for 3 years, and am finishing up my paramedic bridge. I realize you all don't have level 3's in your region, but up here it's a standard that 3's act on almost the same protocols as 4's, so i've been a standalone als provider for 3 years (the last year i've been working full-time). Anyway, I'm heading back home this summer to start pre-med school, but I want (need, let's face it) to continue doing ems calls. I'm excited to get into the area, but I'm intimidated because I don't know anyone or anything about many of the agencies. I did work for metrocare as a basic a few years back doing transports (summer), but that was mostly in the Bronx. I live in Purchase, near White Plains and Port Chester/Rye.

My question is (Sorry for being so long) where would you all recommend I start looking for employment? At this point, I *think* it would be part-time, but it may be full-time depending on how my pre-med schedule looks. Is it really necessary to start out on a transport rig when I've been running emergency calls (often as the only medic on the call) for a few years already? I've been in touch with a couple places down there, but with limited responses. I really appreciate any input you all have to offer, I've been reading some of the posts and this seems like a pretty open forum for discussion on topics like this (and other topics!). I also plan to volunteer for local FD or other agency once I get settled a bit. Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to getting involved in the area!

I'm 99% Sure Port Chester, Rye, Rye Brook EMS is looking for help. I don't really know anything about the corps but I am a volunteer in PCFD and we are always looking for volunteers. The EMS corps if you have experience I think will take you in and put you on the road but you would have to go there and get in there face if you wanted a golden response. Just thought I give you a little word and if you want to join a deptartment let me know I could help you do so especially if you are going to work in the EMS corps.
