Wednesday, July 6th, 2005 - CHICHITANO, JOSEPH F. - CHICHITANO, JOSEPH F. Joseph F. Chichitano, a lifelong Peekskill resident, died on July 4, 2005 at 100 years old. He was born in Cantanzaro, Calabria, Italy on September 6, 1904 to Frank and Carmela Sinopoli Chichitano. He came to the United States in 1908, and attended Drum Hill School, Peekskill. At Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, he married Mary M. Mahan. She predeceased him February 2001. Mr. Chichitano was employed as a welding instructor at the former NY Central Railroad Harmon, NY, for approximately 50 years, retiring from Penn Central in 1971. He was a communicant of Assumption Church, Peekskill, where he served as an usher for 50 years. He was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Peekskill Council 462. He was life Deputy Chief with the Peekskill Fire Department, and its oldest active member. Mr. Chichitano originated the Fourth of July Parade in Peekskill, and formed its first classes in first aid, as well as established the fire department's bowling and softball leagues. He enjoyed baseball and league bowling, playing on the railroad league and the Machabees Baseball team. Mr. Chichitano is survived by his daughters, Margaret Lancaster and Constance M. (Floyd) Conklin both of Peekskill, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. His sister Lucy Di Terlizzi of Pittsburg, CA also survives. He is predeceased by sisters Rose Lazzaro, Lee Gagliardi, Mary Rotello, and brothers Peter and Frank Chichitano.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 8, 2005 at Assumption Church, Peekskill at 10 AM, followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery, Cortlandt Manor.  

Visiting at Dorsey-Carlone Funeral Home, Peekskill on Wednesday, 7-9 PM and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM.
