06:26 PM EST on Friday, February 13, 2004

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- A firefighter was killed and another was wounded Friday after authorities responded to a domestic violence call at a home. A

third firefighter was also injured.

Lexington police chief Anthany Beatty said fire and police crews converged on a house near Interstate 75 in southeast Lexington about 3:45 p.m. EST,following a report that a woman had been shot there.

When firefighters approached the house, they came under fire, Beatty said. Two were shot, Lexington fire chief Robert Hendricks said. Another

firefighter was injured, but Hendricks wouldn't specify how.

Lexington fire Major Greg Stapleton said one of the workers, a firefighter, had died. Another firefighter who was shot was in stable condition,

Stapleton said.

The interstate was immediately shut down and authorities surrounded the home. The interstate later reopened.

Two helicopters landed on an exit ramp near the scene. The two workers hit by gunfire were airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital.

"This is our worst nightmare," Hendricks said.

Beatty said about 5:30 p.m. EST that police negotiators were in contact with an unidentified person inside the house. Beatty said he did not know how many people were in the house.

No shots had been fired since the initial response by police and fire crews, he said.

"We're going to be here on this scene until we resolve the situation," Beatty said.
