Flashover Training

4 posts in this topic

I recevied the following link from one of our Deputy Chiefs recently. I watched it twice, and I realized a few things.

1. All of us should watch this and familiar ourselves with flashover and flashover prevention.

2. If you have the oppurtunity, make time to take the Flashover Survival Course in Rockland County. I have taken it two times. It is the same thing as featured in this video clip.

3. Learn the signs so it doesn't happen to you!

Here's the link: http://www.swedesurvival.com/popup_video_hi.asp

I noticed a few things in this video that maybe some of you will too. The narrarator makes a comment about the amount of water used, but the Instructor explains how it is used makes the difference. I recall from my trainings that short bursts of water can control it, and using a wide fog on the smoke and fire can burn the firefighters. One thing we should keep in mind is to keep our nozzles set on a tight pattern all the time so in the heat of the moment our colleagues don't get hurt needlessly. To be honest, I think smooth bore nozzles with a 15/16" tip are great. We have two of them, and we are experimenting with those smooth bore / fog combo knobs. Make sure you know how your nozzles work, and more importantly, how each pattern will affect your fire attack.

Be safe, Be smart.

I had the oppurtunity to participate in the flashover simulator at the Rockland County FTC during my Intial Attack class.

Definetly something every firefighter should witness and experience in person. Because experience is one of the best tools to train.

We have two of the combination nozzles and i cant stand them they turn on two different ways. Plus the desired nozzle pressure is different for the smoth bore and the fog nozzle. My opinion is decide if you are going to use fog nozzles or smooth bores and just stick with it and forget the combination.
