When the Fairview Fire District was organized in 1928 their first Apparatus purchase was a 1928 Ahrens Fox Engine Model NS-4

Engine 1 served as front line pumper unitl 1954. It was then placed into reserve status until 1966 when it was sold to George Proper in

the Albany NY area. It was sold to a party in Mass. in the late 1970s

And then to a Fire Truck Collector in California in 1979??.

The Fairivew Fire Dept tracked it down in 1977 but is was not for sale. On March 4 2004 members of the Fairivew Fire Dept traveled to Big Bear Lake California with then intent to purchase same.

I am glad to report within the next 30 days Engine 1 will return to

its original owner the Fairview Fire Dept.

The Engine is in running condition and with most of the original

equiptment and the hose.

Can somebody explain the purpose of the chrome ball that's signature to the Ahren Fox's?....I've often wondered what it was for.

I have sort of known about this for a bit and have kept quiet.... to help build some anticpation (lol)... but I want to say, I think that this is truly AWESOME! Great job FFD of finding this beauty and working to bring her home where she belongs! I love to see fire departments taking steps to preserve part of their heritage!

As for the Chrome Ball..... this is kind of interesting. The ball is actually an air pressure chamber that is typically 1/2 full of air and 1/2 full of water when the truck is pumping. It basically works to create a smoother pumping motion and create a less choppy discharge.... in essense it prevents the hoses hooked up to the discharges from thrashing about...... this was important in the days of old canvas jacketed hose. This pressure chamber was really quite common in the old days, in fact it was a standard feature on piston pumps.... the precursor to modern centrifical pumps of today. Aherns Fox pumpers with the front mounted pumps where piston pumps the smaller red ball further back on the top of the pump is actually a piston. What made the Ahrens Fox's air pressure chamber unique was really it's size and placement. Additionally if you were to look at an old steam pumper you would notice between the seat and the stack a tear drop looking chrome plates ball......that too would be the air chamber. I hope I got all of that right... and I hope that makes sense, as well as answering your question.
