Schumer calls for national firefighter cancer registry

Schumer, speaking outside of New Rochelle's Fire Station 1, said he plans to introduce a bill in the Senate that would establish a registry managed by the Centers for Disease Control. It's an idea that came from the 9/11 attacks, which caused cancers in many firefighters, he said.

"What we learned over future years is that new kinds of cancer developed," he said. "In this modern world, where there are many new kinds of chemicals and technologies in our buildings, in our furniture, even in kids' toys, when it burns, there's stuff in the air that gets into your lungs if you're a firefighter rushing to fight the fire, and it can cause cancer."
