NYS EMT vs. CFR

4 posts in this topic

Trying to convince someone that CFR is a waste of time, and that they should just go for EMT. Does anyone know the difference in hours for each course and if CFR is still a valid NYS cert?

According to the state DOH website CFR classes are 48-60 hours, EMT is 150-190. I'd say "waste of time" is pretty subjective. It really depends on what this person intends to do with it.

CFR is practical in many situations, such as for police officers & firefighters. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't FDNY have CFRs on the apparatus that run to medical calls?

If you're looking for a job, CFR isn't going to help much.  EMT is really the minimum standard for EMS training in most professions.

If you're just looking for additional training to help you in an emergency, CFR isn't bad.

It really does depend on what is motivating you to pursue EMS training in the first place and how you'll apply it.
