Fire-sniffing dog becomes newest member of the Yorktown Heights F.D.  

 

 

(02/12/04) YORKTOWN - The Yorktown Heights Fire Department has a new weapon for sniffing out arson.  

Blaze, the firefighting German shepherd, is the newest member of the Yorktown Heights Fire Department. Fire investigator Eric DiBartolo says the breed of German shepherd that Blaze is has a sense of smell that's about a million times stronger than any human.  

DiBartolo is Blaze's handler and a member of the county's fire investigation team. He says Blaze is called in to determine the cause of a fire by using his acute sense of smell.  

So far Blaze and DiBartolo have been called to five fires since becoming certified in December. He says in four of those cases Blaze had a positive hit for accelerants.  

Blaze also takes cases countywide. So if arson is suspected, Blaze will be there sniffing his way through the scene.
