Chicago Firefighter Dies After Fall Down Elevator Shaft

Daniel Capuano, 42, was among several firefighters searching through thick smoke for the source of a fire on the second floor of the building at 92nd Street and Baltimore Avenue around 2:40 a.m. when he fell down an elevator shaft to the basement, according to Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago.

"As the firefighters went in there, they saw some holes throughout the floor," Santiago said outside the hospital. "They gave out an emergency alert, 'Be careful.' It looks like firefighter Daniel had just walked into the elevator shaft as he was searching, couldn't see and fell."
