Some communities feel that "local boys and girls" have intimate knowledge of the community and thus will be a more effective firefighter. Not all communities feel this way but a majority do.

In our city, it is because the taxpayers and city council believe that a resident will have more of a vested interest in the city, and the salary will stay in the city supporting city business. Whether or not this is a fact is up for discussion

If a person wants a job within a community that has residency requirements, move to the community in question.

The problem is, a majority people who want this job can't afford to live in many of the communities in Westchester with residency requirements. That gives advantage to a lot of the younger people who live with their parents.

Also, does anyone know if the test or local hiring policies have an upper age limit?
