Hey....

We just got a shocking phone call that Pete Lund (Woodmere, Long Island active

firefighter/former Chief and Retired Lieutenant of FDNY) died in the line of

duty this evening while operating at a house fire in Woodmere-where he was still

an active volunteer firefighter and former Chief. Pete was so well known in our

business as an outstanding firefighter, instructor and officer. Pete was highly

experienced in so many levels of operations, including: firefighting and rescue

operations and devoted much of his time educating and training other

firefighters. Pete retired from FDNY in 2003 out of Rescue 2. We will post

additional information as it becomes available.

As always, but in this case especially, we offer our deepest sadness and prayers

to Pete's family-his wife Andrea, his daughter, Pete's son Matt-who is also a

firefighter/Lt. and who was operating on the scene, and the members of the

Woodmere (http://www.woodmerefd.org/) and FDNY Departments.

Pete Lund was a friend of 17 years. I met him when he worked as a LT of FDNY Rescue 3 and then moved on to Rescue 2 where he retired from. He survived 9/11 and now this. He will be missed rest in peace brother!!! RWC

Eyewitness News reporter Ken Rosato is live in Woodmere Long Island with more on this tragic story. 

The 54-year-old Peter Lund a volunteer with the Woodmere Fire Department, collapsed while battling the blaze at 753 Long Acre Avenue just after 10 p.m. last night. Lund had just finished venting the house when he suffered chest plains and shortness of breath. 

Officials tell Eyewtiness News he sat down on a curb and collapsed, suffering from apparent cardiac arrest. He was taken to St. John's Hospital and pronounced dead. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. 

Lund recently retired as a lieutenant from the New York City Fire Department's Rescue 2 unit in Brooklyn. 

During his career, Lund risked his life numerous times to save others. In 2002, he aided in the rescue of an unconscious mother and her three-year-old son from their burning Brooklyn apartment. In 1996, he narrowly escaped the collapse of a chop-shop in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. 

After retiring from the FDNY, Lund continued to volunteer with the Woodmere Fire Department, following in the footsteps of his father. Lund's father, Clarence "Bunny" Lund, joined the Woodmere Fire Department in 1924 and worked his way up to chief - a position he held in the 1960s.
