Newark EMS Heavy Rescue

20 posts in this topic

While lost in Newark last night trying to find my way back to 78 East I was passed by 2 Newark EMS ambulances and an EMS Heavy Rescue going to a job. Can someone tell me what the EMS Heavy Rescue's role is in Newark?

University Hospital of Newark staffs a heavy rescue as part of the EMS contract with Newark. It is manned by two EMT's or paramedics. They mostly due vehicle extrication, but are equipped to do high-angle rope rescue, trench rescue, and industrial/marine rescue. They do not go into fires with Newark FD.

Goes back to the days when the FD was so busy with fires, they didn't (or couldn't) respond to accidents.

If memory serves, Newark FD Rescue was less responsible for extrication and spent their efforts on Hazmat instead

Several of the EMS/First Aid Squad/Rescue Squad organizations in NJ provide Medium or Heavy Rescue services. Some do and some to not provide fireground operations as well. Below are two quick ones that I happen to find online.

Your right, quite a few Jersey agencies play that role, and in a few other States as well.

They have an HME rescue that's a spare. Pretty rough shape too, lol.

Here is the Hme, I hear the alf isnt suitable for the road when there is snow on the ground so the hme still gets used alot 2hgr81k.jpg

From what I heard it had to do with either the suspensions or breaks. Didn't hear it from umdnj guys just from a few buffs in the area.
