Newark (NJ) FD State Of The Fire Apparatus Fleet

What is on the drawing board, or ordered, for Newark (NJ) FD to start replacing some of the frontline apparatus?

I heard today the Ladder 11 had a catastrophic failure with some major components of the aerial, and it is now out of service indefinitely. They have no working spare aerials, and with such are down a ladder company at the start of fire season. Does anyone have clarification or additional information on this?

I had read that newark was putting out bids for 4 engines and 3 ladders, but the new mayor rescinded that and is looking to close companies instead.

I've heard that bids are currently being put out for 4 new Engines to replace Engine's 10, 11, 13, and 18 (those four companies currently run 1997 E-Ones) and 3 new Ladders to replace Ladder's 7, 8, and 10 (those three companies currently run 1996, 1997, and 1994 E-Ones respectively).

Also, Engine 11's current rig, a 1995 E-One which was refurbished last year, may go to Engine 16 to reconstitute it. Engine 16 has been browned out indefinitely for the past several years. The current Engine 13 might go to Engine 28 to replace a 1989/2000 E-One telesquirt.

Me thinks you missed the underlying theme. If you don’t have a fire department, the city would burn down. This could be Newark's Urban Renewal. With all the buildings gone, they apply for grants for housing, the insurance companies pay for new commercial structures and presto changeo, you have a new city and lots of jobs all around. Then they will have the tax money to pay for employees! A stroke of genius. You get around those pesky EPA regulations and building approval processes as the reconstruction would be an emergency.

By the way, don’t drink the Kool Aid, I am being sarcastic. No one should have to work with dangerous equipment.
