Handling Elevator Emergencies

August 12, 14 from 19:00 to 22:00 hours

August 16 from 08:00 to 17:00 hours

Description: Designed for personnel that respond to emergencies involving stalled elevators

and/or escalator entrapments, this course provides classroom and practical training on how

to safely and efficiently remove passengers from stalled elevators and/or escalator

entrapment. Topics include safety, operating principles, elevator construction, elevator

safety devices, initial response steps, lock/out – tag/out procedures, elevator doors, use of

hoistway door keys/pick tools, poling, removal of passenger from stalled elevators, fireman

service (phase 1/ phase 2), use of elevators during high-rise fire operations, fire suppression

involving elevators and escalator emergencies.

Target audience: All emergency personnel

Prerequisites: None

Registration: Pre-registration is mandatory. Walk-ins are not permitted. Register

through your chief or training officer. Chief's and training officer's can register their

personnel at; http://emergencyservices.westchestergov.com/. Other Emergency Services

personnel, to register please e-mail FireTraining@westchestergov.com. Each student must

present a NYS Training Authorization Letter which can be accessed and downloaded when

registering. Class size is limited to twelve (12) students.

Venue: Westchester County DES Training Center, 4 Dana Rd. – Grasslands Campus,

Valhalla, New York. All students are to park in the lot adjacent to the Support Services

Building located at 35 Walker Road. (There is a stairway linking the parking lot directly to
