Go to ct.gov Then go to Dept. of Emergency services. On that link you can sign up for an e-mail notice they will send you for most any Fire Dept. that is having a test or hiring. Some FD in Ct. are civil service, some are not. You can also sign up for CPAT .

If your trying to get hired in CT you will need to take the CPAT to even sit for most tests. It is offered every couple of months by the state check the website. A lot of CT departments also require EMT certification for testing. Just an FYI. They are hiring, there is a class of 55 going through the state academy right now.

You are correct on that, but only take it with a grain of salt, because they use the state academy with the exception of new haven, Bridgeport, and sometimes Stamford.

Basically all other depts. send recruits through the state academy.

NY has multiple academys throughout the state.

They are probably hiring at the same rate as most. the baby boomers are going, yet they are still trying to do more with less all throughout the country.

best advice is to study hard and take everything. if you want it bad enough you will get it. you just need to keep on pushing toward your goal

New Haven FD just gave a test and the department is down about 125 guys.

Bridgeport is using the State Fire Acedemny in Windsor Locks for training their new probies. I think about 12 - 14 are there now. (Class # 52)

For those who might be interested, I think right now Mohegan Sun Casino is taking applications for firefighters. Not a city dept but they do respond to many areas as a RIT Co. I'm sure EMT is required.

Some thoughts on what helped me end up landing a job in CT:

  • As others have said - always have a CPAT that is less than a year old.
  • If you are an EMT, get reciprocity from CT
  • Get National FF1 Certification (other levels don't hurt either)
  • Get a CDL or the Ct Q-Endorsement
  • Visit CTFIRE-EMS.com

I found that while most jobs don't have a residency requirement - when you get far enough in the process, they may use it against you,or put it another way it may give another candidate an advantage over you. Also, if the application states something is CT required, eg a 'CT Driving Licence', still apply. What have you got to lose - apart from the application fee? Or at least reach out to the Dept / HR Dept.

Good luck!
