City budget focuses on public safety

Included in the passage of the city's annual budget is funding for two rescue squads: small teams of firefighter/paramedics that will be able to be quickly deployed to medical emergencies throughout the city. The squads will begin operation in October and Crawford said he expects them to respond to about 2,000 calls annually.

"Medical calls now encompass 65 percent of what we do and they increased 5 percent over the last calendar year," he said. "Focusing on what our citizens and visitors need drive and dictate the type of needs and responses we are going to have. It only made sense to start focusing on that emergency medical component that we were doing more and more of every day."
