Arlington 2nd Alarm w/ Rescue of occupant 48 Raymond Ave 1-7-13 Photos

13 posts in this topic

In the early morning of Monday January 7th 2013, Arlington was dispatched to 48 Raymond Ave for smoke in the Building. Units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the duct work of the first floor business. Firefighters made entry to find a fire in the kitchen. Fire had also extended to the attached apartment building in the rear. Arlington had gotten reports of a resident in the apartments was trapped and could not exit the structure. While firefighters were locating and trying to put out the fire on the first floor, Firefighter Joe Tarquinio Jr. went to the rear of the building and made entry to the second floor to search. The rear door had to be forced open. He then made his way down the hallway in zero visibility and in deteriorating conditions, and found an unconscious male. He then radioed command and told 32-9 that he needed help getting the victim out. At that time Firefighter Bill Tompkins Jr. made his way to the 2nd floor to assist. The pair were able to get the male occupant out with some difficulty, as conditions were getting a lot worse. While this rescue was being made, other Arlington Firefighters were chasing fire through out the structure. Mutual Aid was received from the City of Poughkeepsie, Pleasant Valley, Roosevelt, Lagrange and New Hamburg Fire Departments. The fire is under investigation by the Arlington Fire District. Congratulations Group 4, JOB WELL DONE!

Awesome job by the AFD members on scene, which, if I am not mistaken, is the same Group who had a JOB down the block with rescues a few days ago, right?

It's GOTTA be the new gear.... :)

Yes Dan, you are correct. The same group had Haight and Fowler a few days ago. We are off to a busy start, and it could be the gear! ;)

I drove through Detroit...err..I mean ARLINGTON today...saw this building and was pleasantly surprised to see that not only did the AFD do a steallar job of extinguishing such a blaze, but it was a dmn good stop too..now I am no contractor, but i would assume this building IS repairable?

And had they not held it to the building or origin, it would have been a bona fide BLOCK BURNER, destroying many businesses and local landmarks. I am almost positive the building on the exposure 4 side has a block long common basement ;a buddy has a tattoo parlor and leased the basement for.....an archery practice range  . (unless that is a violation of town ordinance, then it's leased for storage... )

Dan, did you catch the Building marker? Red box with an X. It's nice seeing proactive stuff like that!

x129, you are right about the basement. The buildings are owned by Vassar College and they are determining if it is better to repair or start over. It was originally built in 1902 so there are many things that would need to be addressed (asbestos, wiring, etc). They also own the vacant lot next door.

The box is based on the Urban Search and Rescue markers and is used for any building in the town that has been condemned This does not have to be a result of fire conditions.

Be nice if the neighbors to the West did this....but we would go broke buying spray paint.
