These trucks take a beating everyday. Some comapnies will run 5 to 6000 alarms a year, in an apparatus designed for a 10 year lifespan. This is why the FDNY apparatus spec is so unforgiving, and no exceptions are allowed by the builders. Apparatus is not allowed to refurbished per the contract with the UFA. As long as the main components work ie engine, pumps, ladders, transmissions, etc that is the main thing with the city shops. Body work is done on an as needed basis, but if the paint fades or is scratched so be it. Upon disposal of any city equipment all markings at to be removed, which usually means spray paint, although here it looks like a roller was used.
