Yonkers firefighters battling 3-alarm blaze on Webster Avenue

7 posts in this topic

Firefighters are battling a very smoky, three-alarm blaze at 103 Webster Ave. that broke out shortly before 4 p.m.

As of 4:30 p.m., flames engulfed the roof of the three-story residential building and smoke enveloped the neighborhood. Firefighters had set up a ladder to the roof of an adjoining building and chainsaws were heard. The building appears to be a total loss and another building has been damaged. A large throng is congregated to watch the firefighters as they fight the stubborn blaze in the Nodine Hill section of the city. Details about a cause and possible injuries are not yet available.

Another Fire Alarm 10-26 was reported at 654 Bellevue Avenue, at around 4:35 PM in the City, where the remaining Yonkers Fire Apparatus (Squad 11, Engine 314, and Ladder 70 and Car 4), along with Mutual Aid companies (New Rochelle Engine 22) from Neighboring Communities were dispatched to.

At 4:40 PM, a 10-32 (Alarm Reported) at Gorton High School where other Mutual Aid companies, along with Engine 314, Ladder 70, who were just released from the 10-26 job, were dispatched to.

Squad 15 was among one of the units dispatched to the reported alarm at Gorton High School. New Rochelle Engine 22 and Ladder 12 were relocated to Yonkers Station 12 shortly after 4pm.

Ladder 15 and 2103 from Eastchester are in Yonkers and responded to the activated alarm at Gorton High School. Units have been released from the scene and are relocating to Yonkers Station 9 ( 53 Shonnard place).

Squad 15 is out at Station 9 with L15, 2103, and Bat. 18.

In an excellent audio interview, Deputy Chief John Flynn explained to a Lohud reporter how members of two engine companies were briefly trapped by flames Sunday afternoon. The two companies were battling fire that had extended to an adjoining structure when there was an additional extension. They were assisted by the FAST company and used ground ladders to get out.

It was a terrific interview but after twenty minutes of trying to find it again on the Lohud site I give up.

I did find an amateur video that shows the fire just before and after the arrival of Yonkers fire companies.

I give our hometown guys a big thumbs-up on another job well-done!

It ended up being a 4-Alarm, btw.

A good summation of the updates and work that has still been going on at the scene can be found on LoHud.com.

Excellent interview of Chief Flynn. Always nice when the media gets info from good, credible sources.

Hope for a speedy recovery for the members who were trapped, scary situation.

Looks like another job well done by the YFD!
