In Maritime News a few months ago there was an article about the current Marine Co. 9 and the old boat. It stated in the article that it would be replaced in 2007.

OK, excuse me here, I'm a total boating novice.

I assume that this boat would be BIG "traditional" fireboat.

I don't know if anybody is familiar with the new LA Fireboat 2, but I have heard that FDNY is very interested in that

Very true, it has been talked about and LA's gets a great deal of respect on the water (from fire and non-fire)personel alike. It uses a z-drive prop system to allow the entire prop (it has 2) to turn 365 degrees. Easy to steer in tight spaces and make quick changes.

That being said, just like my favorite rig is a Mack CF, I hate to see the old boats go. The current marine 9 is beautiful and given its age, really very immpressive. Fast and a HUGE pumping capacity. 19,000 gpms, I believe.

I know FDNY likes the new LA Fire Boat 2. From things I heard is that they are looking at that company. However I don't think we would see anything on that scale.

Marine 9 was the largest Fire Boat with pumping power until LA Fire Boat 2 went into service. They pump 38,000, or the power of 38 FDNY Engines.

Wow, thats the best picture I've seen of that yet!! Its awsome, but how often does it REALLY get put to use.......

....it may be able to pump as much as 38 engines, but you could buy 40 engines for the cost of the boat....and pay how many salaries......

That may be so, but our efficiency in marine operations is kind of lacking. We get a water job, and the boats give ETAs of over an hour. They are just too slow. A new boat, a la FB-2 gives us speed, and pumping power. And with the recent plans do develop the Brooklyn Waterfront, it makes sense to get the big fast ones.

BTW, I wonder why the Department hasn't gone and bought a couple of old USCG 41 footers and put them to use. They are fast and can pump more than those small boats we have right now.
