NASA plans to deliver the Space Shuttle Enterprise via modified 747 tomorrow, Friday April 27, 2012. Its flight will depend on the weather. It is scheduled to fly up the Hudson River to approximately Tarrytown sometime between 1030 and 1130 am. Here is a link : http://www.nycaviation.com/where-to-watch-space-shuttle-enterprise-in-new-york/ Enterprise will be brought from JFK to the Intrepid by barge at a later date.

We may go down to the TZ Bridge to watch it turn around, not sure yet. Where will this shuttle be kept?

It will be kept at the Intrepid Air/Space Museum. It will be housed on the flight deck until a permanent structure can be built. Expected open in July to the public.

Should be quite a sight. The shuttle on the back of a 747 and escort aircraft coming up the Hudson at 1500 feet. Wow!

Looking forward to it!!!

Saw it from the airport...could barely make it out against the clouds, though.

Can someone explain to me why this was the preferred means of transport instead of truck, train or boat? Seems like either would have been more efficient.

Size. Its too big to go by rail, it would not fit under the catenary of the Northeast Corridor, nor fit thru any of the tunnels if going by truck. Boat could have been an option, but its never been done. NASA already has all the associated hardware for moving by 747, as this was how they returned them to Kennedy Space Center after landings out west.

I'm extremely interested to see the move from barge to intrepid. That's a lot of space shuttle to swing through the air.
