BALTIMORE (WJZ) — With a $48 million budget shortfall for the city, one councilman has an idea that he says will help the deficit: putting advertisements on fire trucks.

The city owns the truck. If they want ads, the trucks get ads. They just need to be aware there's an added cost. Firefighters generally take a lot of pride in their trucks and put a lot of time and money into them. Take away that pride and maintenance costs will absolutely go up.

I hate the idea! But if your gonna do it put ad's on your entire fleet meaning your garbage trucks, all DPW vehicals, police vehicles, the mayors car, and any other vehical the city owns. Like ny10570 said the companies take pride in their apparatus. The engines and trucks are more then modes of transportation to firefighters. Also, once you start this can you discriminate who advertises on your rigs and what is in their ad? THe rigSounds like it's a can of worms just waiting to be opened.....Stupid idea!!

A few years ago (maybe 10-12?) there was a company out there that would "match you" to the advertiser. They'd basically take your requests for a vehicle and match you with advertisement to fund said purchase. The ads were supposedly to be matched to the dept and tasteful. Such as the suppliers of technology the dept used. They specifically said they'd not use Dunkin Donuts for the police or similar stereotypes that would be a mockery. I never saw a single unit that went through, but our County Dispatch Director was on the list for a communications vehicle. In a memorable speech to the local advisory board he noted "he didn't care if they painted it green and called it a pickle, as long as he got what they needed". To that end the comms vehicle project was known as the Pickle Truck, and never came to fruition. The concept will likely take off given the financial woes as of late and those dept's who'd drive a rainbow painted engine as long as it was staffed properly.

The Comm. of Detroit actually has a better idea. 1) Create a special list of abandoned or vacant structures updated by FD companies and inspections. If there is no life safety and the building is well engulfed in flames, most incoming units will go 10-8 allowing a smaller number of units to contain the fire and prevent its spread. This will allow other units to be available for the rest of the city and not fighting a fire in a building no one is in and that no one wants. 2) Having Navy SeaBees demolish all abandoned buildings in Detroit 3) Using a FD demolition crew to raze other hazardous structures.
