Starting Salary

The current starting salary for a trooper is $62,403.60 (including uniform allowance). The second-year total compensation significantly increases to $69,489.30. Top pay for a Trooper I is $108,847.13. Troopers receive yearly increments. All recruits receive $777.78 every two weeks, plus overtime pay. Room and board are also provided while training.

Education

A candidate must have: (1) a bachelor's degree; OR (2) possess a minimum of 90 credits and will complete their degree by a specified date prior to the written examination. The deadline for completing a bachelor's degree under option 2 and remaining eligible will be announced at the time of initial application. (3) OR a candidate must have an associate's degree or 60 college credits, PLUS at least 24 months of satisfactory employment or military experience; OR (4) 30 college credits, PLUS at least 24 months of active duty military service with an honorable discharge. All college degrees/credits must be from an accredited college or university.

Age

Applicants must be at least 21 years old and must not reach their 35th birthday prior to the graduation date of their State Police class.

Citizenship

Only citizens of the United States are eligible for appointment to the New Jersey State Police Academy.

Driver's License

Applicants must have obtained a valid automobile driver’s license at the time that background investigations begin.

Thanks for the info. Also make sure you have a current copy of your Driver's Abstract ready to send in.

Initial Applications will be available beginning May 7, 2012 @ 9:00 a.m. EST (Eastern Standard Time)

The application-filing deadline is 5:00 p.m. EST (Eastern Standard Time) on May 29, 2012.

Following the electronic submission of the New Jersey State Police initial application, the application will only be considered complete upon receipt of:

  • Your original signed Driver’s Abstract Certification Page provided at the end of the online application, and
  • Your Certified 2012 Driver’s Abstract obtained at your expense from the Motor Vehicle Commission or Motor Vehicles Services Office of your state.

Both of these documents must be received, postmarked no later than June 4, 2012. Documents received postmarked after June 4, 2012 will not be processed and you will not advance in the selection process.Only Certified Driver’s Abstracts generated by your respective state government Motor Services provider will be accepted. Any certified Driver’s Abstract obtained from any other provider WILL NOT be accepted.

Instructions will be provided at the end of the online application for submitting your 1) original signed Driver’s Abstract Certification Page and 2) your Certified 2012 Driver’s Abstract to applicants who successfully submit an online application. Applicants are encouraged to obtain their Certified Driver's Abstract as soon as possible; so that, they can adhere to the strict postmarked date of June 4, 2012. The most expedient way for New Jersey applicants to obtain a Certified 2012 Driver’s Abstract is in person at local NJ Motor Vehicle Commission agencies offering walk-in service or at a NJ Motor Vehicle Commission Regional Service Center. A 5 year Certified Driver’s Abstract is sufficient for applicants possessing a New Jersey Driver’s License.

Out of state applicants may want to contact the Motor Vehicle Commission or Motor Vehicles Services Office of their state NOW, to find out the most expedient way to obtain a Certified 2012 Driver's Abstract.
