NYC hiding report on 911 system failures?

6 posts in this topic

An articled in todaysNY Post: http://www.nypost.co...2D8GWmnD22nnQwN that is allegedly being withheld to cover the dismal failure of Bloomberg's system improvements. $2 billion dollars wasted, but my pension is whats causing the economic problems.

My wife is a City school teacher. (She teaches in East New York, but more on that for another day.) She comes home practically every single day with stories about how much money the City wastes on outside consultants, who know more or less nothing about how the City as a whole operates. This whole debacle is yet another instance of how no one within City Hall knows what the hell is going on, and is willing to be led around by an outside consultancy firm - that as a regular business practice, over-inflates the value of their "services" - in order to correct a "problem." Truth be told, there was really nothing wrong with the way 911 operated until Bloomberg f-ed with it. But then again, the same can be said for pretty much every single thing (ie. Citytime) that his "administration" has touched since January 1, 2002. But Grumpy, you're right. Your consistent abuse of the overtime system, and your eventual "double-dipping" once you retire (that one is a favorite of our fair governor's) are what not only caused the current fiscal crisis, but also expanded it to the level that it is today. Blatant government waste had nothing to do with that.

UCT uninformed call taking) system is working great...Nothing better than going to a diff breather where the call taker left out the fact that she was having trouble breathing from smoke because her kitchen was on fire!

2nd source for elevators!

This isn't news to anyone who works in one of the three (FD, PD, EMS) response agencies in NYC. Ever since the UCT program began, the quality of the information we receive has declined. This coupled with the Bloomberg administration's push to lower response times has negatively impacted our operations. Companies are turned out with little more than an address and then we are, hopefully, given additional information over the air while responding. The idea here is, get them on the road, then fill in the missing info. Stupid...we need all the time we can to get ready, begin size-up and prepare for what might greet us at the box location.

Initially, the UCT program really cut the legs off of the dispatchers. That has since improved with the program of the UCT call taker conferencing in a FD dispatcher, but it's not as good as it used to be. We have some really good dispatchers on this job, real old school guys who know the job and the boro they work in. To hear a guy give turn by turn (Beef of Redlight and others, some of you'll know who they are) directions into a box for a re-locator from out of boro is pretty impressive. Some people in the Bronx CO know the boro like the back of their hand without a map insight. I'm sure this is true for the other boro's as well.

For the Mayor and his cronies, this is all a numbers game with the hopes of reducing companies or staff or ambulance tours. They've done nothing to improve operations. All they've accomplished is hollow, meaningless numbers that don't tell the real story.
