'BREAD-AND-BUTTER FIRE'

By Scott J. Croteau TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER, MA — City firefighters know the dangers of fighting a three-decker blaze.

There are open channels for fire to shoot up, porches that can fall apart, and other nooks and crevices where fire filters.

The structures are marked by an outdated form of construction known as balloon-framing.

“It is the bread-and-butter fire. It is the type of fire we go to hundreds of times,” Fire Lt. Donald Courtney said.

Nice job. Three-deckers/balloon-frame multiple dwellings are the typical bread-and-butter fire all throughout New England, particularly CT, MA, and RI. Most jobs many urban fire departments respond to are in these types of buildings. Cities like Stamford, CT, Bridgeport, CT, New Haven, CT, Waterbury, CT, Providence, RI, Hartford, CT, Springfield, MA, Worcester, MA, and Boston, MA and loaded with three-deckers/balloon-frame dwellings. In They're like tenements, brownstones, and brick M/D's are to New York.

Fires spread through them quickly, usually via the spaces between the walls. Also, many have either open and enclosed porches either on the front of back of the structure or both that generally burn fast and can collapse quickly. So, if anyone out there tends to run across these buildings for jobs, stay safe!

"sfrd18" is exactly correct. New England is loaded with these types of buildings. And that is "ONE GREAT PROJECT".
