Police, Fire Officials Investigate Liquid Fertilizer Found in New Haven Home

New Haven Register

By William Kaempffer, Register Staff

NEW HAVEN – Police and fire officials are taking precautionary measures after finding multiple barrels of liquid fertilizer at a home on Greenwich Avenue in the Hill neighborhood.

Police said the fertilizer was discovered when officials responded to an overnight report of a chimney fire at dilapidated multifamily home next to Interstate 95. A significant police presence remains and the homeowner remains in the house.

A neighbor, Kris Sainsbury, said she knows the owner of the home, who she believes has lived there for about 15 years, and knew about the barrels of fertilizer in his back yard. She said he had offered her some of the fertilizer for her plantings and she viewed the barrels as harmless.

Neighbors said FBI officers were on the scene earlier.

Good looking out by NHFD. Never know what you might find on a call!

Update: Turns out it was not Ammonium Nitrate or any other potentially hazardous fertilizer. Still, a good reason to keep your eyes open though.
